Up in the Air about the Cover of Up in the Air

There's an interesting small post on Spine Out about Walter Kirn's novel Up in the Air that, you all know by now, received rave reviews and was up for oodles of Oscar Awards. The piece is about how one designs a book jacket about airplanes, airports and the like in the wake of 9/11. The book was launched on that very day.

Up In The Air was launched on the morning of September 11, 2001, at a meeting that was cut short due to the tragic events of the day. "The story takes place almost entirely in and around airplanes and airports. If there was one thing no one wanted to see on a book cover at that time was anything to do with airplanes and airports."

You can read more, here.

And, as a brief aside, Walter Kirn and Susan Orlean chat it up about "How to Write a Movie “Inspired by” a Book (or, the New Matt Damon Vehicle Explained)."
